About JCB card numbers

JCB (Japan Credit Bureau) was founded in Tokyo in 1961 and is the main domestic card brand in Japan. It is accepted internationally and is common among travellers from Japan and other Asian markets, which makes it relevant for travel, hospitality and cross-border e-commerce sites.

JCB numbers start with 3528 to 3589 and are normally 16 digits long, although the scheme allows up to 19. The 3-digit security code is called CAV2 and is printed on the back of the card. Because JCB numbers begin with 35, simple validators that treat every number starting with 3 as American Express or Diners Club will misidentify them — a good bug to catch with generated test data.

In the United States and some other countries, JCB cards are accepted on the Discover network, so a US checkout may route them as Discover even though the brand is JCB.

How to test JCB payments safely

  1. Generate a batch of JCB numbers above and paste them into your form to confirm brand detection, length and formatting.
  2. Change one digit of a generated number — your form should now reject it, because the Luhn check fails. You can confirm why with the validator.
  3. Switch your payment provider to sandbox / test mode and use its documented test cards for authorization, decline and 3-D Secure scenarios.
  4. Never use real customer card numbers in development or staging environments.
Generated JCB numbers are for testing only. They are not linked to any JCB account, hold no balance and will be declined by any live payment system.

Frequently asked questions

What range do JCB card numbers use?

JCB numbers start with 3528 through 3589 and are usually 16 digits long.

What is a JCB test card number?

Stripe documents 3566 0020 2036 0505 for test mode; Braintree lists 3530 1113 3330 0000 in its sandbox.

Where is JCB accepted?

JCB is the leading card brand in Japan and is accepted worldwide; in the US it is processed on the Discover network.

Are these real credit card numbers?

No. The numbers follow the public format rules of each card network (prefix, length and Luhn check digit), but they are not linked to any bank account, cardholder or credit line. They exist only to test software.

Can I buy something or start a free trial with a generated card?

No. A real payment needs an authorization from the issuing bank, and no bank has issued these numbers, so every charge is declined. Trying to pay with a number you do not own is fraud. Use them only in sandboxes, forms and test data.
