Random ZIP Code Generator

Real US ZIP codes picked at random from 40,977 codes in all 50 states and DC — with the place and county each one belongs to — for test fixtures, form validation and shipping-zone tests. Choose a state, ZIP+4 format or a bulk list of up to 500.

Real codes, random picks

Each ZIP code is drawn from the 40,977 five-digit codes that the GeoNames postal code list holds for the 50 states and DC, spread over 29,540 places. With “Any state” the draw is weighted by how many codes a state has, so Texas and California turn up more often than Delaware or Rhode Island, much as they do in real customer data. Each code keeps its place and county, which you can copy as City, ST 12345 or download as CSV and JSON columns.

That makes the output useful where a made-up five-digit number is not: shipping-zone and tax-rate lookups, store locators, delivery-area checks and any form that verifies the ZIP code against the city.

First digit: the national area

The first digit of a ZIP code places it in one of ten national areas, running roughly from the Northeast (0) to the West Coast (9). These are the states in each area according to the codes the generator uses:

Some states appear under two digits: New York’s Holtsville (005) and Fishers Island (063) sit in the 0 area, while the rest of New York is 1.

ZIP code prefixes by state

Three-digit prefixes in use in each state, with its number of ZIP codes and the place with the most codes. A state-level check such as “Texas ZIP codes are 75000–79999” misses outliers like Texas’s 733 and 885.

ZIP, ZIP+4 and what a checker can tell

A ZIP+4 adds a hyphen and four digits that narrow the code to a block face, a building or a large mail recipient. Those segments are not published as open data, so the generator’s +4 part is random: right format, not a real segment. Use it to test fields that accept both 12345 and 12345-6789, and to check that your code does not cut the extension off or reject the hyphen.

The checker answers two questions: does the prefix belong to a state, and is the exact code in the list? Prefixes outside the states and DC are named too — Puerto Rico (006–009), Guam (969) and military mail (340 AA, 090–098 AE, 962–966 AP), which many forms wrongly accept as state addresses or wrongly reject.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real ZIP codes?

Yes. Every five-digit code comes from the GeoNames US postal code list, which follows the ZIP codes the USPS has assigned, including PO Box and unique ZIP codes for large organisations. The place and county are the ones listed for that code. Only the four extra digits of the ZIP+4 format are random, so a ZIP+4 is correct in format but not a real delivery segment.

Why do some ZIP codes start with 0?

ZIP codes in New England, New Jersey and Puerto Rico start with 0, and two New York codes (00501, 00544) are the lowest in the country. Spreadsheets and integer database columns drop the leading zero and turn 02134 into 2134. Store ZIP codes as text and test with a 0-prefixed one.

Can I get ZIP codes for one city?

The state pages linked below have a city picker: choose a state, then a city, and every generated address uses one of that city’s real ZIP codes. Here, pick a state and the ZIP codes come from all of its places.

How do I check whether a ZIP code exists?

Type it into the checker above. It tells you which state the first three digits belong to and whether the full code is in the list. A code that fits a state’s prefix but is not listed is most likely unassigned. For address-level validation you need the USPS address database or a verification service.

Is a ZIP code the same as a postal code?

It is the US kind of postal code: five digits, no letters. Canada uses six-character codes such as K1A 0B1 and the UK alphanumeric postcodes such as SW1A 1AA; see the Canadian and UK address generators.
