IBAN Generator

Create random IBANs that pass validation — correct length, BBAN structure, national check digits and mod-97 check digits — for 90 countries. For testing payment forms and seeding test data: these are not real bank accounts.

Test data only — the account numbers are random and no bank has issued them. Never send money to a generated IBAN.

What is an IBAN?

An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is the standard way to write a bank account number so that it can be used across borders. It is defined by ISO 13616 and is used for SEPA transfers in Europe and for international payments in many countries in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Every IBAN has the same three parts:

PartExample (Germany)Meaning
Country codeDETwo-letter ISO 3166 code of the country where the account is held
Check digits89Two digits calculated with the mod-97 algorithm over the whole IBAN
BBAN3704 0044 0532 0130 00The domestic account number. Its length and layout are fixed per country; here, an 8-digit bank code followed by a 10-digit account number

Each country registers its BBAN layout with SWIFT, the IBAN registration authority. The layout says how many characters each field has and whether it holds digits, letters or both. That is why a German IBAN always has 22 characters, a French one 27 and a Norwegian one 15.

How the generator builds a valid IBAN

  1. Structure. It takes the country’s BBAN layout from the IBAN registry — for example 8!n10!n for Germany: eight digits, then ten digits.
  2. Random account. Each field is filled with random characters of the right type, using your browser’s cryptographic random number generator. If you enter a bank code, it is used instead of a random one.
  3. National check digits. Many countries put their own check digit inside the BBAN. The generator calculates it for 21 countries, including Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia and Tunisia, so the IBANs also pass these stricter checks.
  4. IBAN check digits. Finally it moves the country code and 00 to the end, turns letters into numbers (A = 10 … Z = 35), takes the remainder modulo 97 and subtracts it from 98. The result is the two check digits after the country code.

The output passes every check a form or library can make on its own: length, character pattern and checksum. You can confirm any of them, with every step shown, in our IBAN checker.

298-digit bank + 5-digit branch + 10-digit account + account type + owner

Germany, Pakistan, France and Italy are where most people search for test IBANs. For German IBANs, the bank code is the 8-digit Bankleitzahl; enter a real one (for example of your own bank) if your software checks that the bank exists. UK IBANs combine the first four letters of the bank’s BIC with the 6-digit sort code.

What test IBANs are for

Not for payments. A generated IBAN is not linked to anyone. For payment provider sandboxes (for example SEPA Direct Debit in Stripe or Adyen), use the test IBANs that the provider documents, because only those return predictable results.

Frequently asked questions

Are generated IBANs real bank accounts?

No. They have a valid structure and correct check digits, but the account numbers are random and no bank opened them. A transfer to one either fails or, by chance, reaches someone else’s account, so never send money to a generated IBAN.

Will a generated IBAN pass validation?

Yes, for every check that can be done without asking a bank: country code, length, BBAN character pattern, the two ISO 13616 check digits, and — for 21 countries such as Belgium, France, Spain, Italy and Poland — the national check digits inside the account number. It will not pass a lookup that confirms the account exists.

Can I generate an IBAN for a specific bank?

Yes. Enter a bank code (for example a German Bankleitzahl or a UK bank code) and every IBAN will use it. The account part stays random and the check digits are recalculated.

Why does my bank’s tool say the IBAN is wrong?

Some banks also check that the bank code exists or apply internal account-number rules (Germany alone has more than a hundred). A random IBAN can fail those checks. For format testing that is usually what you want; for gateway sandboxes use the test IBANs the provider documents.

Is the generator private?

Yes. IBANs are generated in your browser with its cryptographic random number generator. Nothing is sent to or stored on our server.
