How 2Checkout test cards work
2Checkout doesn’t use a separate sandbox account. You place test orders in your normal account once the testing system is enabled for it, using a test buy-link: generate one under Setup › Generate links › Checkout Links and click Place a test order, or add DOTEST=1 to a buy-link yourself. Without the testing system, DOTEST has no effect.
Use any expiration date, any CVV and any billing currency. The result comes from the cardholder name: John Doe approves the order and all renewals, Mona Doe fails with insufficient funds, Angela Doe with an expired card, and so on. Two names approve the first order but make automatic renewals fail, so you can test subscription dunning without waiting for a real renewal.
Billing details can be fictitious, but use an email address you control so you receive the 2Checkout notifications and can sign in to myAccount. If you sell software, make sure your fulfilment recognises test orders — otherwise your key generator may deliver real license keys for them.
Cardholder names that trigger each case
Enter one of these names as the cardholder name with any test card:
| Cardholder name | Result |
|---|---|
| John Doe | Approved: initial order and all recurring charges |
| Mike Doe | Approved initial and manual renewals; recurring charges fail with Insufficient Funds |
| Jenny Doe | Approved initial and manual renewals; recurring charges fail with Stolen Card |
| Mona Doe | Insufficient funds |
| Mark Doe | Try again later |
| Red Doe | Stolen card |
| Joy Doe | Authentication failed |
| Angela Doe | Expired card |
| Adrian Doe | Invalid card number |
| Jack Doe | Invalid CVV (security code) |
Testing 2Checkout payments step by step
- Make sure the testing system is enabled for your 2Checkout account.
- Generate a test buy-link in the Merchant Control Panel (Setup › Generate links › Checkout Links).
- Pay with
4111 1111 1111 1111and the name John Doe to test a successful new acquisition. - Repeat with the decline names to check each error message in your flow.
- Buy a subscription as Mike Doe or Jenny Doe, then run the renewal to test failed recurring charges.
Common errors and fixes
- DOTEST=1 is ignored
- The testing system isn’t enabled for your account; DOTEST has no effect without it.
- Real license keys sent for test orders
- Make your fulfilment (dynamic key generator) recognise test orders.
- Renewal tests fail to start
- Automatic renewals, trial conversions and upgrades need an earlier test order that created a subscription.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 2Checkout test credit card number?
4111 1111 1111 1111 (Visa) with any expiration date and CVV, and the cardholder name John Doe for an approved order.
How do I test a declined payment in 2Checkout?
Use a test card with a decline name, for example Mona Doe (insufficient funds), Red Doe (stolen card) or Jack Doe (invalid CVV).
Is 2Checkout the same as Verifone?
Verifone acquired 2Checkout in 2020 and now publishes its documentation; the product keeps the 2Checkout name.
Can I use these test cards on another gateway?
Usually not. Each gateway only recognises its own documented test numbers in its own sandbox. Some numbers, such as 4111 1111 1111 1111, appear in several lists, but the results they trigger differ. For format-only testing on your own forms, use our card generator.
