How Mollie test cards work
Mollie uses a test mode rather than a separate sandbox account: call the API with your test API key (it starts with test_), or send the testmode parameter when you use access tokens or app tokens. Test payments are isolated from live data, and Mollie calls your webhooks just as it does in live mode.
In test mode the hosted payment page is replaced by a test checkout screen where you pick the status the payment ends in. The card number mostly drives the brand logo in Mollie Checkout and Mollie Components: Mollie notes that test card payments are currently always processed as Mastercard.
To test failure handling, create the payment for one of the magic amounts below and set it to failed on the test screen; the payment then carries the matching failureReason. Only EUR is supported for this. Recurring test payments have no checkout URL; instead they include a changePaymentState link, which paid test payments also get so you can create refunds and chargebacks.
Magic amounts for failure reasons
Create a test card payment for one of these amounts, then set it to failed on the test checkout screen. The payment response then includes the matching details.failureReason. Testing only supports EUR.

Testing Mollie payments step by step
- Copy the test API key from your Mollie dashboard.
- Create a card payment of €10.00 in test mode and open its checkout URL.
- Enter a test card, choose paid on the test screen and check that your webhook marks the order as paid.
- Create payments for the magic amounts, choose failed, and check that each failureReason maps to a clear message.
- Use the
changePaymentStatelink to create a refund and a chargeback for a paid test payment.
Common errors and fixes
- No failureReason in the response
- Use an exact magic amount in EUR and set the payment to failed on the test screen.
- Visa card shows as Mastercard
- Expected: test card payments are processed as Mastercard; the number only changes the logo.
- Endpoint rejects test mode
- API endpoints for business operations don’t support test mode.

Create the payment for a magic amount such as €1,007.00 (insufficient_funds) and choose failed on the test checkout screen.
Which currencies work for Mollie card tests?
Only EUR is supported for testing the card failure reasons.
Can I use these test cards on another gateway?
Usually not. Each gateway only recognises its own documented test numbers in its own sandbox. Some numbers, such as 4111 1111 1111 1111, appear in several lists, but the results they trigger differ. For format-only testing on your own forms, use our card generator.
