Fictional test data. Street names and house numbers are assembled at random from generic words; cities, regions and postcode formats are real so validation behaves realistically. Any match with a real address or person is coincidental.

PO Boxes instead of home delivery

Many Alaska communities have no carrier delivery to the door. Residents collect their mail at the post office, so their mailing address is a PO Box while the house itself has a separate physical address — or none that a carrier would recognise. Systems that refuse PO Boxes, or that use one address field for both billing and shipping, fail for these customers. About one generated Alaska address in five is a PO Box line, so make sure your form, your validator and your shipping rules all have an answer for it.

Milepost addresses

Outside towns, places along the highways are often described by milepost: Mile 85 Richardson Hwy, Mile 12 Parks Hwy. There is no house number at all, the first token is the word “Mile”. Some of the generated addresses use this form with Alaska’s real highway names (Parks, Glenn, Seward, Sterling, Richardson, Steese and Alaska Highways). Use them to test that your street parser and your geocoder fall back gracefully.

Off the road network

Juneau, the state capital, cannot be reached by road; neither can Bethel, Nome, Kodiak, Barrow (Utqiaġvik) or most villages. Goods arrive by plane or barge, and carriers charge Alaska and Hawaii surcharges or exclude them from “free shipping” offers. If your checkout has rules for the “contiguous United States”, an Alaska ZIP code from 995 to 999 is the test case. Anchorage uses 995, Fairbanks 997, Juneau 998 and Ketchikan 999.

One area code, two time zones

All of Alaska shares area code 907, one of the few states still on a single code. Time zones are less simple: most of the state is on Alaska Time (UTC−9, UTC−8 in summer), while the western Aleutian Islands beyond 169°30′ W use Hawaii–Aleutian Time. Generated phone numbers are (907) 555-01xx, the range reserved for fiction.

Sales tax on a Alaska address

State rate: none (state). Alaska has no statewide sales tax, but more than a hundred boroughs and cities levy their own — Juneau, Kodiak and Ketchikan do, Anchorage and Fairbanks do not. Since 2020 the Alaska Remote Seller Sales Tax Commission collects local tax from online sellers on behalf of member communities. For a tax engine that is the useful edge case: a 0% state rate with a non-zero local rate.

Cities in the Alaska generator

The generator picks one of these 17 places, then one of its real ZIP codes and one of its area codes. Alaska has 273 ZIP codes in 228 places in the data we use.

Alaska ZIP code prefixes

The first three digits of a ZIP code identify the sectional center facility that sorts its mail. Alaska uses 5 prefixes; each is shown with the place that has most of its ZIP codes and how many codes it holds.

Phone numbers in generated addresses always use 555-0100 to 555-0199, the block the North American Numbering Plan reserves for fiction, so they never ring a real line.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Alaska address be a PO Box?

Yes, and for many residents it is the only mailing address. Accept PO Box 1234 on line 1, and if you ship with a carrier that does not deliver to PO Boxes, ask for a separate physical address.

What ZIP codes does Alaska use?

99501 to 99950: Anchorage 995, Fairbanks and the interior 997, Juneau and the southeast 998, Ketchikan 999. Rural communities each have their own code, usually one per village.

Does Alaska have sales tax?

There is no state sales tax, but many boroughs and cities have a local one. A checkout that hard-codes “Alaska = 0%” is wrong for Juneau, Kodiak or Ketchikan.
