Fictional test data. Street names and house numbers are assembled at random from generic words; cities, regions and postcode formats are real so validation behaves realistically. Any match with a real address or person is coincidental.

Farm to Market, Ranch to Market and County Road addresses

Much of Texas is addressed along numbered state roads: 14250 FM 1960 Rd W in Houston, RM 620 near Austin, Ranch Road 12 in the Hill Country, County Road 123 in the country. FM stands for Farm to Market, RM and Ranch Road for Ranch to Market. The street “name” is a number, so a parser that takes the first number as the house number and the rest as the street name, or that insists on a suffix such as St or Ave, gets them wrong. About a third of generated Texas addresses use one of these forms.

Houston suburbs without a city

Spring, Katy, Humble and Cypress are household names around Houston, but large parts of them are unincorporated: the postal city exists, the municipality does not. Residents there pay Harris County and special-district taxes, not city taxes, and are served by county services. If your system assigns jurisdiction, service area or delivery zone from the city name, a Spring or Katy address is the test case that shows it.

ZIP codes 733, 750–799 and 885

Texas ZIP codes run from 750 in the Dallas suburbs (Dallas itself is 752) to 799 in El Paso, plus two outliers: 733 (Austin, 73301 and 73344, used by IRS and state agencies) and 885 (El Paso). A check such as “Texas ZIP codes are 75000–79999” rejects real ones. Houston has the most ZIP codes of any Texas city, about 180 in the data we use, followed by El Paso, Dallas and San Antonio.

Two time zones and 29 area codes

Texas is on Central Time except El Paso and Hudspeth counties in the far west, which are on Mountain Time, so a delivery-window or appointment system that sets one time zone per state is wrong for El Paso addresses. Houston’s 713, 281, 832 and 346 overlay each other, as do Dallas’s 214, 469, 972 and 945; Austin is 512/737, San Antonio 210/726 and El Paso 915.

Sales tax on a Texas address

State rate: 6.25%. Texas charges 6.25% state sales tax, and cities, counties, transit authorities and special districts can add up to 2% more, for a maximum combined rate of 8.25%. Texas has no personal income tax. Special purpose districts overlap city limits, so two addresses with the same ZIP code can owe different local rates.

Cities in the Texas generator

The generator picks one of these 26 places, then one of its real ZIP codes and one of its area codes. Texas has 2,600 ZIP codes in 1,469 places in the data we use.
