Fictional test data. Street names and house numbers are assembled at random from generic words; cities, regions and postcode formats are real so validation behaves realistically. Any match with a real address or person is coincidental.
“Washington” is a state (WA) and the capital city (Washington, DC), 2,700 miles apart. Autocomplete widgets, state drop-downs that list “Washington” next to “District of Columbia”, and address parsers that see “Washington” in the city position all mix them up. Use a generated WA address to check that the state code — not the word Washington — drives tax, shipping zone and time zone (Pacific, not Eastern).
Seattle splits into sectors, and most street names carry them: avenues put the direction after the name (4521 15th Ave NE, 2210 California Ave SW), while many streets put it before (456 NW 85th St). The same numbered avenue exists in several sectors, so 15th Ave NE and 15th Ave NW are different streets miles apart. Generated addresses in Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland and Vancouver use both forms; check that your normaliser keeps a trailing direction instead of treating it as noise.
Vancouver, Washington, across the Columbia River from Portland, shares its name with the much larger Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. A city-first autocomplete or a geocoder without a country hint often picks the Canadian one, and shipping then switches to international rules. Generated Vancouver addresses carry Washington ZIP codes starting with 986, which is the quickest way to spot the mix-up.
Washington ZIP codes run from 98001 to 99403: Seattle 981, Tacoma 984, Vancouver 986, Spokane 992. Seattle is 206, the Eastside and Everett 425, Tacoma and south King County 253, the rest of western Washington 360/564, and everything east of the Cascades 509.
State rate: 6.5%. Washington charges 6.5% state sales tax plus local taxes, and the combined rate tops 10% in Seattle. Since 2008 the tax is sourced to the delivery address: the rate depends on exactly where the goods arrive, and the Department of Revenue publishes an address-level rate lookup for that reason. Washington has no personal income tax.
The generator picks one of these 23 places, then one of its real ZIP codes and one of its area codes. Washington has 716 ZIP codes in 491 places in the data we use.

The first three digits of a ZIP code identify the sectional center facility that sorts its mail. Washington uses 14 prefixes; each is shown with the place that has most of its ZIP codes and how many codes it holds.

Phone numbers in generated addresses always use 555-0100 to 555-0199, the block the North American Numbering Plan reserves for fiction, so they never ring a real line.
Checked October 2026. Street names and house numbers in the generator are synthetic. General US address format, ZIP code structure and form-testing tips are on the US address generator page; ZIP codes on their own come from the ZIP code generator.

WA. DC is the District of Columbia; addresses there read Washington, DC 20500, with Washington as the city.
Keep the direction exactly where it is: 4521 15th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105. Moving or dropping it points to a different street.
Seattle itself is 206. Bellevue, Redmond and Everett are 425, Tacoma is 253. Generated numbers follow the city, for example (206) 555-0147.
