Canada Address Generator

Create fictional Canadian addresses in the Canada Post format — civic number and street, municipality, two-letter province code and a postal code whose first letter matches the province — for test fixtures and form testing.

Fictional test data. Street names and house numbers are assembled at random from generic words; cities, regions and postcode formats are real so validation behaves realistically. Any match with a real address or person is coincidental.

How a Canadian address is written

Canada Post’s addressing guidelines put the civic address on one line and the municipality, province and postal code on the last line: 1520 Birch Cres / Ottawa ON K2B 7E4. Apartment or suite numbers go in front of the civic number with a hyphen — 1204-88 Lakeshore Rd — or after the street as Apt 1204. Street directionals (NW, SE) follow the street type and are common in prairie cities such as Calgary and Edmonton.

Canada Post recommends upper case, no punctuation and two spaces between the province code and the postal code on the envelope. Your database can keep mixed case; the generator returns one space.

Postal code structure

Canadian postal codes alternate letter–digit: A1A 1A1. The first three characters are the forward sortation area (FSA), the last three the local delivery unit (LDU).

Validate with ^[ABCEGHJ-NPRSTVXY]\d[ABCEGHJ-NPRSTV-Z] ?\d[ABCEGHJ-NPRSTV-Z]\d$ after upper-casing, and cross-check the first letter against the selected province.

Provinces and territories

Canada has ten provinces and three territories, each with a two-letter code used in addresses: AB, BC, MB, NB, NL, NS, ON, PE, QC, SK, NT, NU and YT. The province is required on Canadian mail, unlike the county in the UK. Older data may contain PQ for Quebec or NF for Newfoundland; map them when you import legacy records.

Testing tips for Canadian address forms

Building a Canadian test data set

For good coverage, generate a batch from every province rather than only Ontario: the first letter of the postal code changes, the rural X0A code in Nunavut exercises the “0 in second position” case, and Quebec city names bring accents into your CSV exports. Pair each address with a 555-01xx phone number in the city’s real area code, and check that your phone formatter prints +1 (613) 555-0147 the same way it would for a US number. If you calculate sales tax, remember that GST, HST and PST combinations depend on the province, so a mixed batch tests that logic too.

What makes these addresses fictional

Municipalities, province codes and the first letters of the postal codes are real; the rest of the postal code, the street name and the number are generated. Any match with a real address is a coincidence. Use the data only in test, staging and demo environments.

Validation pattern used for the Postal code: ^[ABCEGHJ-NPRSTVXY]\d[ABCEGHJ-NPRSTV-Z] \d[ABCEGHJ-NPRSTV-Z]\d$. It checks the format only — whether a code is actually in use is known only to the postal operator.

Phone numbers in Canada test data

Canada shares the North American Numbering Plan with the US: +1, a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit number. The generator uses only 555-0100 to 555-0199, the block NANPA keeps for fictional use, with the city’s real area code.

Frequently asked questions

What is the format of a Canadian postal code?

Six characters in the pattern letter–digit–letter, space, digit–letter–digit, for example K2B 7E4. The first letter shows the province or region.

Where does the apartment number go in a Canadian address?

Usually before the civic number with a hyphen (1204-88 Lakeshore Rd), or after the street as Apt 1204.

Can I use 555 numbers for Canadian test data?

Yes. Canada is part of the North American Numbering Plan, and 555-0100 to 555-0199 are reserved for fictional use across it.

Is this a real address in Canada?

No. The city, province or territory and postcode format are real, but the street and house number are random. Use the addresses for testing forms, databases and shipping-rate logic, never to send mail or goods.
