Australia Address Generator

Create fictional Australian addresses in the Australia Post format — unit and street number, street, locality, state and a 4-digit postcode in the right range for that state — for test data and form testing.

Fictional test data. Street names and house numbers are assembled at random from generic words; cities, regions and postcode formats are real so validation behaves realistically. Any match with a real address or person is coincidental.

How an Australian address is written

Australia Post’s format puts the street address on one line and the locality (suburb or town), state abbreviation and postcode on the last line: 23 Banksia Parade / Geelong VIC 3220. Units and flats are usually written with a slash before the street number — 7/23 Banksia Parade means unit 7 at number 23 — or spelled out as Unit 7, 23 Banksia Parade. On envelopes the last line is printed in capitals; in a database mixed case is fine.

Australians write the suburb, not the city, on the last line. “Melbourne” in a generated address stands for a suburb inside the Melbourne postcode range; production data would show names like Richmond or Brunswick.

Postcode structure

Australian postcodes are four digits, and the first digit mostly follows the state:

Numbers starting 1, 8 and 9 are mostly PO boxes and large-volume receivers. The leading zero in Northern Territory postcodes (0800 Darwin) is the classic bug: store postcodes as text, and validate with ^\d{4}$ rather than a numeric range.

States and territories

Six states and two mainland territories have standard abbreviations that are always written in upper case: NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA, TAS, ACT and NT. The state is part of the address, so make it a required drop-down. If you check postcode and state together, remember that a few postcodes cross state borders (for example around Albury–Wodonga), so treat a mismatch as a warning, not a hard error.

Testing tips for Australian address forms

Building an Australian test data set

Mix states and territories in one batch: Northern Territory addresses bring the leading-zero postcode, units with a slash test your street parser, and ACT postcodes in the 2600 range sit inside the New South Wales number block. Pair addresses with ACMA test numbers — landlines in the matching region such as (07) 5550 1234 for Queensland, or one of the listed 0491 57x mobiles — and check that your formatter produces the international form +61 7 5550 1234 without the leading zero. If you calculate shipping zones, metro and regional postcodes in the same state should land in different zones.

What makes these addresses fictional

Localities, states and postcode ranges are real; street names are built from generic words such as native plants and birds, and numbers are random. Any match with a real property is a coincidence. Use the data only for testing, development and demos.

Validation pattern used for the Postcode: ^\d{4}$. It checks the format only — whether a code is actually in use is known only to the postal operator.

Australian landlines are (0X) XXXX XXXX with a one-digit area code, mobiles 04XX XXX XXX. The generator uses only ACMA’s numbers for creative works: (02/03/07/08) 5550 xxxx and 7010 xxxx in the matching region, and the 30 listed 0491 57x mobile numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How many digits is an Australian postcode?

Four, for example 3000 (Melbourne) or 0800 (Darwin). Keep them as text so the leading zero of Northern Territory postcodes is not lost.

What does 7/23 mean in an Australian address?

Unit 7 at street number 23. The unit or flat number comes first, separated from the street number by a slash.

Are there fake Australian phone numbers for testing?

Yes. ACMA lists numbers for TV, film and creative works, such as (02) 5550 xxxx, (03) 7010 xxxx and mobiles like 0491 570 156. The generator only uses those.

Is this a real address in Australia?

No. The city, state or territory and postcode format are real, but the street and house number are random. Use the addresses for testing forms, databases and shipping-rate logic, never to send mail or goods.
