Fictional test data. Street names and house numbers are assembled at random from generic words; cities, regions and postcode formats are real so validation behaves realistically. Any match with a real address or person is coincidental.

How a Nigerian address is written

A Nigerian address usually starts with the house number and street (14 Harmony Close), followed by the area or estate, the town or local government area, and the state: 14 Harmony Close, Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos. Plot numbers are common in new developments and in Abuja (Plot 312, Unity Crescent), and many addresses add a direction from a known road, such as Off Allen Avenue, or a landmark like a church, school or filling station.

Big cities are better described by area than by city name. In Lagos, people write Ikeja, Surulere, Lekki or Victoria Island rather than just “Lagos”; in Abuja they give the district (Garki, Wuse 2, Maitama). Estates and “GRAs” (Government Reserved Areas) are part of everyday addresses, so allow them in the area field.

Postcodes

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) assigns six-digit postcodes. The first digit identifies a postal zone and the following digits narrow it down to a district and delivery area; Lagos codes start with 10, Abuja with 90, Port Harcourt with 50 and Kano with 70. In practice the codes are not widely used on everyday mail or online orders, and many people do not know theirs. Make the field optional and never block checkout on it. Generated codes fall in the right range for each town, but the last digits are random.

States, FCT and LGAs

Nigeria has 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, which contains Abuja. Forms usually show the state with a select list; include the FCT and label it clearly, because it is not a state. Below the states are 774 local government areas (LGAs), and some delivery and onboarding forms ask for the LGA as a separate field. If you collect it, cascade the LGA list from the selected state.

Testing tips

Using the data in fixtures

Generate a batch per state and use it everywhere an address is stored or printed: signup, checkout, invoices, delivery labels and customer support tools. Mix plot-based Abuja addresses with Lagos street addresses and estate flats, and check that your search finds a customer by area name (Lekki, Wuse 2) as well as by street. Leave some records without a postcode to make sure exports, reports and label templates handle the empty field cleanly instead of printing “null” or failing validation further down the pipeline. Because many Nigerian customers give a landmark rather than a precise number, also test how your delivery partner’s API receives a long free-text direction.

What is not generated

The tool does not generate NIN, BVN or any other personal identifier. Street names are built from generic words and random numbers; towns, areas and postcode ranges are real so the data looks right in your forms.

States of Nigeria

The generator uses the 37 first-level states below, with the codes used in addresses. Cities are picked from 19 places spread across the country, each with postcodes from its own range.

Validation pattern used for the Postcode: ^\d{6}$. It checks the format only — whether a code is actually in use is known only to the postal operator.

Phone numbers in Nigeria test data

Nigerian mobile numbers have 11 digits domestically (0803 XXX XXXX, 0706…, 0812…) and +234 internationally without the leading 0. We know of no officially reserved fictional range for Nigeria, so the generator leaves the phone field blank instead of inventing numbers that could belong to a real subscriber.

Frequently asked questions

Does Nigeria use postcodes?

Yes. NIPOST uses six-digit postcodes, but they are rarely written on everyday mail or online orders, so forms should treat the field as optional.

What is an LGA in a Nigerian address?

A local government area, the level of government below the state. Nigeria has 774 of them, and some forms ask for the LGA in addition to the city.

What does GRA mean in an address?

Government Reserved Area — a planned residential district originally laid out for government staff, found in many Nigerian cities (for example GRA Ikeja).

Is this a real address in Nigeria?

No. The city, state and postcode format are real, but the street and house number are random. Use the addresses for testing forms, databases and shipping-rate logic, never to send mail or goods.
